About Hvar

The island of Hvar is situated in the Adriatic Sea, in front of the city of Split and between the islands Brac, Vis and Korcula. It is the fourth island in Croatia, according to the extent, and it comprises the surface of 300 km2 and its coast is 250 km long. The island Hvar has Mediterranean nature and climate features. Summers are long and warm, and winters are mild and short. History & culture
The name of the island is without doubt Greek in origin, from Pharos (lighthouse).
The island of Hvar was populated already in the prehistoric times. The island was later inhabited by the Illyrians, who came into conflict with the Greek colonizers in the 4th century BC. Numerous tumuli on the island are of Illyrian origin.

Stari Grad
Stari Grad (Pharos) is the oldest town in Croatia. The same year – 384 b.c. when Greek philosopher Aristotel was born in Trakia, the Greeks from the island of Paros in Agean sea have settled the town on the island of Hvar, and named it Pharos.
Vrboska
Vrboska, the smallest town on Hvar island, is special because of its geographical location hidden in the depth of the bay, the untouched pine forest, the cultural sights with the marks of the Gothic, renaissance and baroque style, and an architecture interwoven with narrow winding roads.
