Hvar town

Hvar is situated in a picturesque natural setting, facing the south, the sun and the sea. Hvar is proud that it has the most sunny hours of all the islands in the Adriatic Sea . Many people say of the town Hvar that it is a town as from a fairy- tale because its arhitecture, wonderful nature and its mild climate.

Things to see:
The Pjaca is per haps the most beautiful and largest town square on the Croatian coast. It is embellished by the “mandrac” (tiny port) and has direct access to the sea.

The impressive loggia was built at the beginning of the 17th century. The monumental Arsenal was built partly in the first half of the 16th century and the oldest communal theatre in Europe was built under the same roof in 1612. The cathedral of Pope St Stephen stands at the far end of the Pjaca, where two parts of the town meet.

The Fortress – Climb up through a park to the Spanjola fortress around sunset. The view over the harbour and Pakleni islands from there is magnificent! The fortress was originally built defend the town from the Turks. It was strengthened in 16th, and then again in the 19th century.

Things to do:
Hvar Summer Performances are a traditional summer cultural manifestation with musical, theatrical and folk programs performed by Croatian and foreign artists.

Hvar patron saint – town protector is Saint Stephen (Sv. Stjepan). The celebration of the patron takes place in Hvar October 2nd and 3rd.

Oldest public theatre in Europe

Did you know that oldest public / communal theatre is in Hvar?
Hvar’s Theatre, situated in the Arsenal building, is a monument of the highest national significance for the Republic of Croatia.
The Theatre was built in 1612, on the first floor of the Arsenal building during the rule of venturesome Duke Petar Semitecolo. The monumental Arsenal building situated in the historical centre of the Town of Hvar is one of the most important buildings of naval architecture of its kind on the Mediterranean.

Hvar Pjaca is perhaps the most beautiful and largest town square on the Croatian coast. It is embellished by the “mandrac” (tiny port) and has direct access to the sea. Shops and restaurants occupy the houses around it, with the cathedral closing its top. Narrow and winding street lead to upper city, with people always leaving and returning to this inevitable meeting point, the heart of the town.

Hvar Arsenal

One of the most monumental bulidings in Croatia is Arsenal, located on the main square. Also it is one of the most impoertant monuments of maritime past, which was used for housing and repairing ships and war galleys from Venice time. It’s construction begun in 14th century but was finished in early 17th century.
In 1612 Hvar theatre was incorporated on upper floor of Arsenal.

The Franciscan monastery

The Franciscan monastery stands on the coast just five minutes walk from the center, and was built in 1450s and 1460s. There is a museum inside the monastery, and a cypress in the courtyard, about 500 years old.
